“Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing. Therefore, just as water retains no constant shape, so in warfare there are no constant conditions.”

Mies

March 26, 2013

miesBorn today March 27, 1886 in Aachen, Germany. As one of the fathers of the modern movement, Mies’ work was a model for the late 20th century. Working and teaching in Chicago, Mies was commissioned to design the Seagram Building in NYC, on which he worked with Philip Johnson.

Mr. Johnson modeled his Glass House on Mies’ Farnsworth House. These photos at the Glass House were taken on Mr. Johnson’s 76th birthday: in front of the pool, and out the glass facade towards the pond below.  Back in the office I asked him if the (terrific) site plan was based on the acropolis, to which he admitted.glass housethrough mullions_greyscale

New Home Sales Jan. 2000 to May 2012

July 5, 2012

The chart above shows the thirteen-year trend in new home sales through the end of April 2012. Last week the census bureau and HUD released new home sales with figures that surprised economists to the up-side. Here is the government press release:

“Sales of new single-family houses in May 2012 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 369,000, according to
estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
This is 7.6 percent (±12.2%)* above the revised April rate of 343,000 and is 19.8 percent (±15.2%) above the May 2011
estimate of 308,000.

“The median sales price of new houses sold in May 2012 was $234,500; the average sales price was $273,900. The
seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses for sale at the end of May was 145,000. This represents a supply of 4.7
months at the current sales rate.”

Geier House

April 19, 2012

Researching models for an underground house, I came upon this Philip Johnson-designed house in Ohio. It is a very nice design. But those condensers on the rooftops are added and not original, as he would never have left those so unconsidered.
