* Baker Hughes has an interactive rig count for North America. It includes oil, gas, and geothermal well rig deployment for the entire industry. Rig count is up appreciably year-over-year, primarily because of oil drilling. Natural gas drilling is down.

* The US roofing association has the ASHRAE 90.1 2007 climate zone map in color. The one that ASHRAE publish in the print version of 90.1 2010 is nearly illegible.

NYC Local Laws and building energy use

February 12, 2011

*As part of PlaNYC, the City has passed four pieces of legislation that make the energy code stricter, require installation of lighting upgrades and tenant meters in non-residential spaces, and require most buildings over 50,000 SF to undertake benchmarking audits, and implement retro-commissioning measures. The rules also deal with lighting efficiency, but the required changes do not take affect until 2025. One change which immediately impacts existing buildings: beginning in May, all NYC buildings over 50,000 SF will be required to file annual energy and water use reports with the Department of Finance. For a comprehensive PDF of the new rules, please email me.

* ASHRAE 90.1 2010 is now available as print or download. I will try to follow with comments after reviewing it.

* ASHRAE are developing bulletin 201P, their smart grid standard. This is being done in partnership with NEMA. I spoke to the ASHRAE president last night, who explained ASHRAE are involved because of the impact of smart grid power and protocols on building mechanical equipment operation.

* DOE has released a new version of EnergyPlus building energy simulation software.

* Ancient Romans had some of the same issues facing us today in NYC: collapsing buildings, and devising energy efficiency measures.
